 Abstract:  Ralph S. Locher (1915-2004) was a Democratic Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio (1962-1967) who became a Judge of the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas (1968-1972), of the County Probate Court (1972-1976), and of the Ohio Supreme Court (1976- ). The collection consists of photographs relating to the mayoralty of Ralph S. Locher in Cleveland, Ohio. Included are individual and group portraits of Locher, and various ethnic groups in Cleveland, particularly Hungarian Americans.

 Abstract:  The Cleveland Picture File I is a collection of black and white and color photographs that depict scenes in Cleveland, Ohio, in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The photographs include views of amusement parks, banquets, bridges, buildings, businesses, celebrations, cemeteries, churches and synagogues, clubs, colleges and universities, conventions, convents and seminaries, court proceedings, disasters, fairs and exhibitions, fire departments, the Flats, hospitals, hotels and inns, housing developments, immigrants and naturalization, industry, labor unions, lakefront and the harbor, libraries, life cycle events, lighthouses, markethouses and malls, the military and military units, monuments, museums, music and musicians, parades, parks, the police department, political campaigns and elections, Public Square, radio and television, recreation, residences, riots/demonstrations/strikes, rivers/streams/brooks, schools (both public and private), social service agencies/charities, sports, streets, taverns, theaters, toll houses, transportation, general views, and zoos and aquariums. 23Title:  Willett Street Cemetery Photographs

 Abstract:  Willett Street Cemetery is the oldest Jewish cemetery in the city of Cleveland, Ohio. It was founded in 1840 by the Israelitic Society of Cleveland, which merged with Anshe Chesed Congregation in 1845. Today the cemetery is administered jointly by Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple and the Temple-Tifereth Israel. Many of Cleveland's early German Jewish immigrants are buried in the cemetery. The collection consists of 22 black and white snapshots of graves at the cemetery.

24Title:  Cleveland Cultural Garden Federation Photographs

 Abstract:  The Cleveland Cultural Garden Federation was founded in 1925 by Leo Weidenthal as the Civic Progress League. In 1926 the name was changed to the Cleveland Cultural Garden League, and in 1952 to the Cleveland Cultural Garden Federation. Weidenthal conceived the idea of a series of gardens, each having a central theme concerning the history of a single nationality group in Cleveland, Ohio. The City of Cleveland and the Work Projects Administration did much of the work on the earlier gardens after a 1927 ordinance set aside areas of Rockefeller Park next to the Shakespeare Garden for the development of similar gardens with ethnic themes. The collection consists of photographs and drawings relating to Cleveland, Ohio's Cultural Gardens, including dedications of the Gardens, sculpture within them, and individuals associated with the Gardens. Also included are views of various "One World Day" celebrations.

 Abstract:  The American Zionist Federation of Cleveland, Ohio, was established in 1970 as a regional office of the American Zionist Federation, a coordinating organization for existing Zionist groups. The Cleveland, Ohio, office was originally called the Cleveland Zionist Federation, but the name was changed to the American Zionist Federation of Cleveland in 1976. It ceased operations in 1980. The collection consists of portraits of members of the American Zionist Federation of Cleveland, and views of various activities; including meetings, special programs, and rehearsals for programs.

 Abstract:  Ferdinand Jirsa (1893-1971) was a Czech immigrant to Cleveland, Ohio, who became a lawyer and a leader in the Sokol movement. He was president of the Northeast District of the American Sokol Organization. The collection consists of individual and group photographs relating to the Czech American community of Cleveland, Ohio, and Cleveland Sokol activities, particularly those carried out by the Sokol Cech-Havlicek.

 Abstract:  Albina Cermak (1904-1978) was active in Republican Party politics in Cleveland, Ohio. She was vice-chairman and secretary of the Cuyahoga County Republican Central and Executive Committees, chairman of the Republican Women's Organization of Cuyahoga County, member of the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections, a Cleveland, Ohio, precinct committeewoman, and a member of the Ohio Federation of Republican Women's Clubs. She was a United States Customs Collector before running unsuccessfully for Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio state senator and Clerk of the Cleveland Municipal Court. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Albina Cermak in her various posts, including United States Collector of Customs, with officials and employees. There are also Cermak family portraits, and individual portraits of noted politicians, including Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard M. Nixon, and Frances Payne Bolton, inscribed to Albina Cermak.

 Abstract:  Louis Rosenblum (1923- ) was born and educated in Brooklyn, New York. Rosenblum served in the United States Army Infantry from July 1943 to February 1946. Returning to Brooklyn College, he graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry in 1948 and subsequently attended The Ohio State University, where in 1952 he was awarded a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry. He married Evelyn Mull in 1949, and the couple had four children, Janet, Miriam, Diane, and Daniel. Rosenblum worked for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Lewis Research Center, Cleveland, Ohio, from 1952 to 1981 as a research scientist. From 1982 to 1988 he worked as a private consultant in photovoltaic and renewable energy systems for American and international clients, including the University of Michigan, the United States Department of Justice, the United States Internal Revenue Service, and the United Nations Development Program. The collection consists of approximately 120 black and white and color photographs, primarily individual and group portraits.

 Abstract:  Hope-Wesley United Methodist Church was formed in 1973, in Cleveland, Ohio, by the merger of Hope United Methodist and Wesley Methodist churches. Hope United was formed in 1967 by the merger of Emanuel Evangelical United Brethren (est. 1865) and First Evangelical United Brethren (est. 1854), two early German churches. Wesley Methodist was formed in 1947 by the merger of St. Paul's (est. 1853) and Franklin Ave. (est. 1833) Methodist Episcopal churches. The collection consists of photographs, one tintype, and two glass slides of the buildings and members of the German Evangelical United Brethren churches of Cleveland, Ohio, which eventually joined to form the Hope-Wesley United Methodist Church, the Emanuel Evangelical Church, and St. Paul's Methodist Church.

 Abstract:  Manuel Levine (1881-1939) was a Russian Jew who immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1897 and became a lawyer and judge, rising to the position of Chief Justice of the Court of Appeals of Ohio. Levine was also interested in the preparation of the immigrant for citizenship and was president of the Cleveland Immigration League. The collection consists of individual and group portraits including Manuel Levine, family members, and colleagues.

The collection consists of photographs of interior and exterior views of St. Stanislaus Church, Cleveland, Ohio. Included are portraits of various pastors, brothers, and members of the congregation.

32Title:  Carmela Cafarelli Photographs

 Abstract:  Carmela Cafarelli (ca. 1880-1979) was an Italian-American opera star, founder of an opera company, and accomplished harpist from Cleveland, Ohio. Her father, Rocco Cafarelli, was a renowned Italian harpist who had immigrated to Cleveland in the 1880s, and was his daughter's earliest teacher. At the age of eight, she began study with master harpist Henry B. Fabiani in Cleveland. As a harpist, she toured the United States and abroad. She also became a solo harpist for the Cleveland Orchestra. Cafarelli studied voice with William Saal in Cleveland, and later attended the Conservatorie Santa Lucia and the Reale Accademia Filarmonica Romana in Italy, earning diplomas in both voice and harp. After her return to the United States in 1924, she undertook additional musical studies with Benjamino Gigli and Pietro Audisio of the New York Metropolitan Opera. In 1929, she returned to Cleveland, and in 1934, founded the Cafarelli Opera Company. This group toured throughout the United States and put on many charitable performances in Northeast Ohio. Cafarelli stopped performing in 1945, but continued to head her opera company and became a leading philanthropist and promoter of the arts in Cleveland. The collection consists of individual portraits of Carmela Cafarelli, including publicity and performance photographs, family photographs including portraits of her father, Rocco Cafarelli, and portraits of Cafarelli family friends and associates.

 Abstract:  The West Side Community House was founded in 1890 in Cleveland, Ohio, by Methodist deaconesses. Early services included nursing, industrial, and domestic classes. Ongoing services included day care, clubs and classes for both boys and girls, Sunday school, vacation Bible school, Christian reading clubs, an Americanization program, and classes in citizenship and English. In 1944 the Community House became non-denominational and adopted a professional social service approach. The collection consists of views of the Methodist Episcopal Deaconess Home and West Side Community House, a social settlement house in Cleveland, Ohio; portraits of staff members and clients; views of institutional buildings; and images of participants in recreational and education programs, including day care, industrial arts, home economics, and camping.

 Abstract:  The Friendly Inn Social Settlement is a Cleveland, Ohio, social settlement founded in 1874 by members of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. It offered a full range of services and social activities, including an outreach program for delinquent boys. Located in various city neighborhoods, including Broadway and Central, Woodland, and Carver Park Estates, its service area became the center of Cleveland's African American community. The collection consists of photographs of activities, games, and sports at the Friendly Inn Social Settlement, and also of the neighborhood it served. Included are many views of African American and Italian organizations at the Settlement and views of housing conditions of the surrounding area.

 Abstract:  Irishtown Bend was the site of an Irish neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio, in the late 1800s. It was located in the riverbank in the Flats, by Riverbend Street from Columbus Road to the Detroit-Superior Bridge on the west bank of the Cuyahoga River.The site was excavated by a group of volunteers led by Dr. Al Lee. One of the volunteers was Sharon Baker. The collection consists of 17 photographs taken at the excavation site in 1988.

 Abstract:  Workmen's Circle of Cleveland, Ohio, (f. 1904) is a secular Jewish fraternal organization formed in the United States to perpetuate Yiddish language and culture, support and promote the liberal political agenda, offer both health and death benefits, and provide a meeting place for fellowship. The collection consists of 219 black-and-white prints, 32 color prints, and 5 hand-tinted prints primarily from Branch 1030 (f. 1939). Included are individual portraits, group portraits of outing, parties, and events, such as a banquet, a branch installation, and Decoration Day.

 Abstract:  The Jewish Community Center of Cleveland was formed in 1948 by the merger of the Council Educational Alliance (est. 1899), Camp Wise (est. 1907), the Jewish Young Adult Bureau (est. 1939), and the Cultural Department of the Jewish Community Council (est. 1945), for the purpose of providing recreational social and cultural programs to Cleveland's Jewish community. By 1959 the center moved from Cleveland to the suburb of Cleveland Heights. The collection consists of photographs, negatives, and glass slides relating to the various functions, activities, and facilities of the Jewish Community Center of Cleveland, Ohio, and its members. Included are indoor events, such as dances, parties, and plays; outdoor activities including camp houses, recreation houses, and other buildings; photographs of the 50th anniversary party of the Jewish Community Center; and photographs of people, activities, and facilities at Camp Wise.

 Abstract:  David B. Guralnik was an internationally-known lexicographer and the editor of the Webster's New World Dictionary, published by the World Publishing Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. He was also a leader in Cleveland, Ohio, Jewish communal organizations and activities, particularly known for his work preserving and using the Yiddish language. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of David B. Guralnik, his wife Shirley Guralnik, family members and friends, and staff of the World Publishing Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. Individuals pictured in theater stills include David and Shirley Guralnik, Philip Nashkin, Sam Neshkin, and Reuben and Dorothy Silver. Also included are portraits and views of events at the Jewish Community Center of Cleveland, the Association of Jewish Libraries, Dictionary Society of North America, Beth Israel-The West Temple, Glenville Community Theater, Workmen's Circle, Adelbert College of Western Reserve University, a Glenville High School class reunion, a Histadruth Scholarship Luncheon, and a U.S. Army group portrait and several views taken during World War II.

 Abstract:  The Joseph Family is a prominent Cleveland, Ohio, Jewish family. The family has been very active in both leadership and support for a number of cultural and social institutions in Cleveland such as the Musical Arts Association (The Cleveland Orchestra), Bellefaire and the Jewish Family Service Association. The collection consists of twenty-three photographic albums and 109 black-and-white and 75 color prints. Most of the photographs in the albums and the 184 prints are family portraits. A lesser number are views from travels of various members of the Joseph family. The collection also contains some individual portraits of prominent Cleveland residents.

 Abstract:  Trinity Evangelical Church was established on the west side of Cleveland, Ohio, in 1911 after the Home Mission Board of the Ohio District of the Evangelical Church felt compelled to institute an English-speaking congregation because the children of German immigrants no longer understood German and disassociated themselves from German-speaking churches. Located at West 25th Street and Scranton Avenue, the church and its membership expanded rapidly in the decades that followed. The church joined the newly formed Church of Christ in 1963, and changed its name to Trinity United Church of Christ. Construction of a freeway physically divided the neighborhood in the 1960s, and membership numbers never recovered. The church closed in 2008 and its members joined nearby parishes within the United Church of Christ. The collection consists of consist of 151 photographs. It includes 103 color prints, 43 black and white prints, and one negative.
